Hoot:  Burrowing Owl Explanatory Research Write-up

In the novel Hoot, everybody loves Mother Paula’s pancakes except the colony of cute burrowing owls that live on the building site of the new restaurant. 

Directions:  Using the library resources, research the burrowing owl and gather facts about it.  From the research you gather, type a 3-4 paragraph explanatory essay in which you discuss the owl, citing the facts you use.  Here are the questions for which you will want to find research:   What are its characteristics?  Where is it found?  What is its habitat? What do they eat?  Do their young hatch from eggs or live birth? How do they rear their young? Are they communal or solitary birds?  Is it endangered, why or why not?  What can be done to help them thrive? Give it a creative title.

Create the essay in Google Classroom, turn it in, and print it out.

Green Space Technical Write-up and Design Drawing Rough Draft and Questions:
Through our work and reflections in class, you will answer some questions and then design a green space of your choosing using the questions to guide you.  Your write-up should answer to the questions 1-6 on the handout and include the following:
A focus on the specific issues and benefits to the community or people the nature space will serve
Creative original elements
Explanation of why the nature space is important to you.
Discuss the plants you chose and why (include elements of LOWERN)

Green Space Experience Reflection:
After our green space outdoor experience in class, you will write a reflection in which you describe the experience.  Reflection should be at least 3 paragraphs and fill one page.  Your reflection should include how you were feeling before the experience, how you felt during the experience, and how you felt after the experience.  You should write about details of your physical and mental state and how the experience made you feel.  Print out and staple to the group "Benefits of Green Spaces" work we did in class.

Benefits of Green Space: Plant Facts
Choose one local plant to research.  It can be the plant you took a picture of in class, a plant around your yard, garden, or nature center, a plant you see at the garden department at Walmart or a nursery.  Conduct research (online or through an expert) to create an informational profile of the plant you chose.
The profile should include the following:
  • picture of the plant - camera, computer image, or drawing
  • common name of the plant
  • scientific (Latin) name
  • characteristics of the plant
  • whether the plant species is native, adapted or invasive
  • the role the plant plays in the ecosystem
  • how local LOWERN factors impact the plant (LOWERN is in your class notes)

Quarter 3 District Performance Task:  Argumentative Essay
 
For the next couple of class periods, we will be working on our District Performance Task in class.  This is an assessment, and may not be worked on or accessed at home.   It is a timed assessment in which students will have 165 minutes to complete.   Students should try to be present for the assessment, barring illness, as they will have to make up the test upon return.  During the assessment, there will be no other homework assigned.

Topic Options:
A.  Should the U. S. be involved in space exploration?

Using the outline we took notes on in class, choose a topic and begin to construct an outline for an argumentative essay.  Introductory paragraph should have in the following order a Hook, 2-3 background sentences, and a Thesis Statement (Claim plus three or four reasons).

Extra Credit - Argumentative Essay Contest
 
Working with the Stossel in the Classroom essay contest link, type an argumentative essay in which you agree or disagree with the minimum wage law and increasing the minimum wage.  The essay must cite evidence from the video on the website and at least two additional sources from the library resources on the Rancho Pico website.
Essay must meet the following requirements:
  • 500 to 1000 words in length (no more, no less)
  • Typed (turned in to Google Classroom)

On Google Classroom, open a Google Doc. and Type Intro, Body 1, Body 2, Body 3, Conclusion.
Body 1 should say Causes

Body 3 Should say Predicting, Preparing and Preventing
You will then start your research which must include at least 3 different sources from the library resources (use login attachment when accessing resources from home)
You must have at least 5 notes (facts) for each subtopic.
When you find a fact that will work for a specific subtopic, cut and paste the direct quote in the corresponding subtopic spot on your document. 
Then cut and paste the MLA citation information for that note (fact). Use Son of Citation Machine for websites

Group Narrative Rough Draft:  Working in class and at home, students will craft a narrative from the agreed upon plot-line.  Each person in the group will be responsible for a section of the narrative (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution)  The facilitator should open a Google Doc in Google Classroom and share that document with the others in the group.  In this way, all group members will be able to access and add to the document.  In order to get the points for the rough draft, each group member should be represented in the document when I open it in Google Classroom.  You do not need to print the rough draft, but it should be a complete story.

Rogue Wave Plot-line Worksheet:  Using your Cornell Notes on Plot taken in class, map out the story Rogue Wave.  You will explain the exposition (time, place, situation, and characters), three important events that advance the plot, state the conflict and what type of conflict it is, indicate the climax, falling action and resolution.  List the protagonist and antagonist and create a theme for the story.  Remember, theme is not one word.  It is a complete idea written in the form of a sentence.  For example The theme is that family love can overcome any obstacle.
